PC show coming this week Empty Re: PC show coming this week

Well, whatever it is, stick to Garmin. Don't say I didn't warn you guys. It's your GIS funeral if you get tempted by some cheapo mainland crap running on some antiquated version of Windows CE with no way of updating your maps.

Either that or get stuck with some hardware marketing which "loans" you "maps of the rest of the world" but were based on data gathered 10-years ago.

And worst of all? Get coerced paying through your nose for map updates twice a year, if you're lucky.

Check out either MalSingMaps(MSM) or MalFreeMaps(MFM) for more information.

The former requires contributions in terms of corrections or raw map updates for a monthly renewable unlock code for their latest maps. Map data is a tad more matured and has links with Garmin to provide Garmin-compiled maps; faster to render and re-calculate, more features like address searches using the 'direct' features available on the hardware/gui. Updates available 'free' for contributors about every two-months.

The latter, founded by the other founding 'father' of MalSingMaps, after finding that the politics and hidden agendas of his co-founder was starting to mar the initial spirit and love of digital cartography. Maps are totally FREE; no strings attached. Map data may not be as matured(easily between 90-98% that of MalSingMaps) but doing so very quickly through a very dedicated but small group of mappers and members. Maps are beautifully rendered and comes in two flavours; full customisation(higher-end hardware) and lite(renders much faster). Updates available FREE for all every MONDAY; I kid you not.

Coverage for both MSM and MFM is mainland Singapore, East/West Malaysia and Brunei.

Final words of advice... DO NOT GET AN EXPORT VERSION. Cheaper, yes. International Warranty, yes. But you stand to lose certain bells and whistles features which are currently still free through MSM's version of maps if you are willing to contend with the hassle of contributions. One being 'Junction View'; you will not be able to get unlock codes for the maps for export versions(non asia-pacific versions) of GPS hardware. A good indicator would be the round AllBright Warranty Sticker Label somewhere on the hardware or the warranty card. AllBright is the sole agent here in Singapore for Garmin hardware.

Junction View is basically a feature of the hardware and map data where when the hardware indicates a turn ahead, it not only shows you where to turn on the vector map, tells you how far more to the turn, but it will also show you an image of the junction ahead with a directional arrow superimposed on the image as to exactly which fork of the turn to take. Useful for major multiple arterial junctions on major highways. Useful, yes, but not essential; just bells and whistles. And if you can forgo that, sticking to an export(non asia-pacific model) version is just as good.

But stick to a Garmin!

Pardon the wall of words.

Those wanna know roughly wat are the stuff being on promo..
can take a look @ this for starters
The best temptation is Viewsonic's 23.6" Full HD LCD monitor @ $289.. Slurppp...

http://www.bootstrike.com/itfairsg/pcshow2009/

Click the top part tap to see the latest fair/show whenever appropriate

this will be the comprehensive one with all the scanned pricelist come thurs onwards
A very worthy bookmarked page cos everyyear there are 4 major IT/Electronic shows. It is better to have an idea what you want before joining the crowd there. Flooded Carparks @ SUNTEC is not joke. Let alone the sea of bargin hunters.

Ya I'm a Garmin user and like it very much also.. but saw the HOLUX at eastgear and fine it to be a good gps too...

The only complain I have for Garmin is leak of button everything also need to touch screen and if e.g. need to mute or lower volume also need to exist map then choose volume then can adjust the volume.

Another thing is the power plug for garmin is USB which is good but the port is build behind so either before you start car go and plug in the power if not when driving and low battery then too bad... you wont be able to so easily plug in the power plug while driving.

Yes, although I agree with Bro Impact2001 that hardware-wise, HOLUX and many other brands can be on par, if not better than Garmin.

But many a GPS-user ends up encountering issues of maps being not updated regularly enough, especially here in Singapore. Furthermore, user contributions in the form of corrections to erroneous map and points-of-interest(POI) data are updated usually within the month in MSM or even within the week in MFM. And FREE.

I can't really remember... But I think East Gear brings in their own stocks of Garmin GPS units which may not be the asia pacific versions. Just look out for the round AllBright Warranty sticker on the back of the unit to confirm or a warranty card bearing their company name.

Thanks.

For the last it fair show, I bought mine from eastgear... Eastgear got bring in garmin and holux.. I knw holux gpsmile63 selling like hotcakes in last IT show.. I knw it becos i bought the last 3rd set... SLA Map upgrade wise i admit will be quite slow as compared to MSM.. Reasons i buy HOLUX is becos of its big screen as compare to garmin..

Pricewise, i feel no difference whether u buy it in pc show or after pc show.. Really cant feel any difference... Perhaps those outdated models will of cos discount much more but the latest models, dont think of it..

In buying GPS, perhaps beside the map updating... u may want to also knw the search time taken to locate ur position and the signal strength... Some gps doesn't work quite well when u pass thru high raise buildings..

The only thing i dun like is the voice navigation of the ENGLISH TTS.. The one that will say out the road name instead of just saying turn left or right..

That voice is terrible and soft despite putting to max.. Oh one thing to take note, if you wish to own a gps that equip with bluetooth, then gpsmile63 selling now might not have.. There two version, one with bluetooth and without BT. I remember i almost kena conned as I bring a local article to the pc show telling them how come the article mention got bluetooth and u guys selling is without bluetooth.. The EASTGEAR tell me they nv bring in that version and the article stated wrongly. Nonetheless i bought it becos of large screen.. if got bluetooth, really best as u can make use of the car bluetooth to project the gps voice.
