PU are mostly found in replica bodykits... While ABS is the original material that are used on original bumpers...

There are also fibre bodykit (Cheap but break apart easily due to pressure as they are very hard or not elastic)
PU is some kind of plastics but not as good as ABS as you might see waves on painted PU material...
There is a better one which is called FRP which is a better mix but I am not sure if this one is better than ABS...

PU is the best material for bumpers & bodykits, being softer and flexible, easy to attach, least brittle (prone to cracking on impact or abrasions) and absorb more impact in a collision - whether with a hard object or pedestrian.
PU is therefore used in original bumpers and kits.

Fibreglass material is brittle and prone to crack on impact etc.
- in fact heard that fibreglass bumpers/kits are not legal for safety reasons. Shocked

Fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) - slightly better than fibreglass, not so brittle, but still lose to PU.
Replica kits are usually made of these.

i do not know about ABS though

Although its a bit dry... .but will shed more lights

ABS resins are hard, rigid, and tough, even
at low temperatures. They consist of particles of a rubberlike toughener
suspended in a continuous phase of styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymer.
Various grades of these amorphous, medium-priced thermoplastics are available
offering different levels of impact strength, heat resistance, flame
retardance, and platability.

Most natural ABS resins are translucent to
opaque, and they can be pigmented to almost any color. Grades are available for
injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, foam molding, and thermoforming.
Molding and extrusion grades provide surface finishes ranging from satin to
high gloss. Some ABS grades are designed specifically for electroplating. Their
molecular structure is such that the plating process is rapid, easily
controlled, and economical.

Compounding of some ABS grades with other
resins produces special properties. For example, ABS is alloyed with
polycarbonate to provide a better balance of heat resistance and impact
properties at an intermediate cost. Deflection temperature is improved by the
polycarbonate; molding ease, by the ABS. Other ABS resins are used to modify
rigid PVC for use in pipe, sheeting, and molded parts. Reinforced grades
containing glass fibers, to 40%, are also available.

Related to ABS is SAN, a copolymer of
styrene and acrylonitrile (no butadiene) that is hard, rigid, transparent, and
characterized by excellent chemical resistance, dimensional stability, and ease
of processing. SAN resins are usually processed by injection molding, but
extrusion, injection-blow molding, and compression molding are also used. They
can also be thermoformed, provided that no postmold trimming is necessary.
(Because the material is not toughened, thermoformed shapes may crack during
conventional trimming operations.)

Properties: ABS plastics offer a good balance of tensile
strength, impact and abrasion resistance, dimensional stability, surface
hardness, rigidity, heat resistance, low-temperature properties, chemical
resistance, and electrical characteristics. These materials yield plastically
at high stresses, so ultimate elongation is seldom significant in design; a
part usually can be bent beyond its elastic limit without breaking, although it
does stress-whiten. While not generally considered flexible, ABS parts have
enough spring to accommodate snap-fit assembly requirements.

Impact properties of ABS are exceptionally
good at room temperature and, with special grades, at temperatures as low as
-40°F. Because of its plastic yield at high strain rates, impact failure of ABS
is ductile rather than brittle. Also, the skin effect which, in other
thermoplastics, accounts for a lower impact resistance in thick sections than
in thin ones, is not pronounced in ABS materials. A long-term tensile design
stress of 1,000 to 1,500 psi (at 73°F) is recommended for most grades.

General-purpose ABS grades may be adequate
for some outdoor applications, but prolonged exposure to sunlight causes color
change and reduces surface gloss, impact strength, and ductility. Less affected
are tensile strength, flexural strength, hardness, and elastic modulus.
Pigmenting the resins black, laminating with opaque acrylic sheet, and applying
certain coating systems provide weathering resistance. For maximum color and
gloss retention, a compatible coating of opaque, weather-resistant polyurethane
can be used on molded parts. For weatherable sheet applications, ABS resins can
be coextruded with a compatible weather-resistant polymer on the outside
surface.

ABS resins are stable in warm environments
and can be decorated with durable coatings that require baking at temperatures
to 160°F for 30 to 60 min. Heat-resistant grades can be used for short periods
at temperatures to 230°F in light load applications. Low moisture absorption
contributes to the dimensional stability of molded ABS parts.

Molded ABS parts are almost completely
unaffected by water, salts, most inorganic acids, food acids, and alkalies, but
much depends on time, temperature, and especially stress level. FDA acceptance
depends to some extent on the pigmentation system used. The resins are soluble
in esters and ketones, and they soften or swell in some chlorinated
hydrocarbons, aromatics, and aldehydes.

Properties of SAN resins are controlled
primarily through acrylonitrile content and molecular weight of the copolymer.
Increasing both improves physical properties, at a slight penalty in processing
ease. Properties of the resins can also be enhanced by controlling orientation
during molding. Tensile and impact strength, barrier properties, and solvent
resistance are improved by this control.

Special grades of SAN are available with
improved UV stability, vapor-barrier characteristics, and weatherability. The
barrier resins -- designed for the blown-bottle market -- are also tougher and
have greater solvent resistance than the standard grades.

Applications: Molded ABS products are used in both protective and
decorative applications. Examples include safety helmets, camper tops,
automotive instrument panels, and other interior components, pipe fittings,
home-security devices and housings for small appliances, communications
equipment, and business machines. Chrome-plated ABS has replaced die-cast
metals in plumbing hardware and automobile grilles, wheel covers, and mirror
housings.

Typical products vacuum-formed from extruded
ABS sheet are refrigerator liners, luggage shells, tote trays, mower shrouds,
boat hulls, and large components for recreational vehicles. Extruded shapes
include weather seals, glass beading, refrigerator breaker strips, conduit, and
pipe for drain-waste-vent (DWV) systems. Pipe and fittings comprise one of the
largest single application areas for ABS.

Typical applications for
molded SAN copolymers include instrument lenses, vacuum-cleaner and humidifier
parts, medical syringes, battery cases, refrigerator compartments, food-mixer
bowls, computer reels, chair shells, and dishwasher-safe houseware products.
Because of their compatibility with many higher-priced resins, SAN resins are
also used as color-concentrate carriers for some engineering resins.

Polyurethanes are used throughout your car — in familiar places
like the foam that makes your car seats comfortable, as well as a few
places you might not expect. Did you know that polyurethanes are used
in the bumpers, the interior “headliner” ceiling section, the car body,
its spoilers, and in all the doors and windows? Polyurethane use in transportation has increased 9 percent
since 1998, and shows no signs of slowing down. Put simply,
polyurethane enables manufacturers to provide drivers and passengers a
lot more automobile “mileage” than just a few years ago, through:

  • reduced weight and increased fuel economy
  • increased comfort
  • corrosion resistance
  • insulation
  • sound absorption

Several types of polyurethane are used in cars and trucks for a variety of purposes. We’ve listed the major categories below.
Polyurethane Foam
Polyurethane foam offers
automobile designers and manufacturers the means to produce seating
that can be easily assembled, disassembled and recycled. It also meets
the highest performance specifications over a wide range of firmness —
without added weight.
Through many years of service, and even under heavy use,
polyurethane foam retains its original firmness, shape and resiliency
for the life of the vehicle. In a study comparing polyurethane-based
seats to other materials, polyurethane cushioning with well over 5,000
hours of fleet use still met the original design intent, with
negligible loss of hardness or comfort. Cushions made with other
materials (polyester and natural rubberized fibers) had to be removed
from the test vehicles due to compacting, deformation and degradation.
Arm rests, head rests, cushioned instrument panels and other parts
of your car’s interior are all made with polyurethane foams. Thanks to
efficient and cost-effective processes, these foams can be recycled to
make carpeting for homes, offices and cars.
Reaction Injection-Molded Polyurethane
The
automotive industry is the largest user of reaction injection-molded
(RIM) polyurethane parts. RIM is used to maximize the shock absorption
of your car’s fenders, bumpers and spoilers, without adding weight or
bulk. Lightweight RIM polyurethanes give cars better gas mileage and
allow engineers the freedom to create innovative designs that otherwise
would never be possible, let alone affordable.
Until recently, metal alloys were used for automobile exterior
parts. However, these alloys are much more susceptible to dents, dings,
stone chips, and corrosion than polyurethane versions.
The advantages of RIM polyurethane continue inside the car. Today,
many interior components are made with RIM, such as steering wheels,
air ducts, floor mats and seat bottoms.
Polyurethane Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants and Elastomers (CASE)
Polyurethane coatings
provide your car’s exterior with the high gloss, durability, scratch
resistance and corrosion resistance that you expect. Polyurethane
coatings are also used to glaze windshields and windows, increasing
strength and providing fog resistance.
Polyurethane sealants and adhesives are also used in the production
of headlights, signal lights and taillights, and are often used to bond
bumpers onto the vehicle. The bond strength, durability, heat and
ultraviolet resistance, combined with the ease of application, make
polyurethane adhesives by far one of the best choices for these parts
of your car.
Polyurethane elastomers are used to make water seals, o-rings, and
puncture-resistant tire fill. The ease of molding these materials,
combined with polyurethanes strength, durability and lightweight, make
them ideal for use in all of these important areas.
Polyurethane Recycling Commitment
Polyurethanes
help make your car safer and more comfortable while adding years to the
vehicle’s life. But what happens to these materials when your car has
reached the end of its useful life?
Polyurethanes are very ecologically friendly, and the solid waste
output of the automobile industry has been substantially reduced
because manufacturers and organizations like the Center for the
Polyurethanes Industry (CPI) pursue innovative recycling methods. CPI,
in particular, identifies, demonstrates and promotes technologies for
recycling and recovering polyurethane process and post-consumer scrap
that continues to make polyurethane better not only for consumers but
for the environment as well.
Already the industry regrinds the flexible polyurethane foam (FPF)
from discarded car interiors into powders that, in turn, help produce
new foam for carpet underlay, athletic safety mats, and other products.
Some recycled foam granules ground down from car interiors are
surface-coated and cured, coming full-circle to return as automotive
floor mats and tire covers.
Used polyurethanes can even be transformed into valuable energy. In
experiments conducted by CPI’s Polyurethane Recycle and Recovery
Council, FPF was added to common municipal solid waste up to levels of
20% by weight. The results showed that the furnace operation and ash
generation remained the same and emissions were under operating limits.
Furthermore, adding polyurethane feedstock generated significant BTU
value, reducing energy output.
In Europe, the European Isocyanate Producers Association (ISOPA)
continues to support the use of carefully controlled incineration to
convert post-consumer waste into valuable energy. Municipal solid waste
(MSW) combustors with state-of-the-art energy recovery and flue gas
cleaning technology are located in several European countries.
Switzerland, Sweden, Germany and Denmark are examples of countries
where this technique is practiced to provide local communities with
electricity and heating scenarios. Up to 10 percent of domestic
electricity requirements can be generated by these units, and it is
increasingly being considered as an acceptable recovery option.

you got partially right.. Yes.. BK delayed is due to reject by LTA compliant.. During the showroom promo, KIA did not send for LTA compliant as they are rushing the fixed the BK for promo. After the May promo, they send it to LTA for compliant but FAIL!! Mach Accessories (Local vendor) had alter the minor changes and LTA has approved to it. So now our BK are still in progress of production and still hear no news from C&C.

Terrier, so the actual CnC BK would be different in terms of look from the showroom one?
I took at closer look under bright morning light in the showroom on friday when I sent my car in to get the knocking sound fixed. The stock bodykit is made from Fibreglass for sure, and the lines on the sideskirt is HORRIBLE. It's not smooth, it's not even straight! I don't know how come I didn't see that when I booked my car. I really wish the final production one would be alot better in terms of quality. Otherwise I might just forgot the BK, I'm getting quite used to the look of my car without BK.
