Auto briefs - Toyota recall
Published: Sunday | January 24, 2010

Toyota recall
NEW YORK (AP):

Toyota Motor Corp built its reputation in the United States as a maker of safe and dependable vehicles, but the quality of the Japanese automaker's fleet continues to be tarnished by serious safety recalls.

Toyota said Thursday it is recalling 2.3 million vehicles in the US to fix accelerator pedals with mechanical problems that could cause them to become stuck. The announcement comes just months after it recalled 4.2 million vehicles due to gas pedals that could become trapped under floor mats, causing sudden acceleration. That problem was the cause of several crashes, including some fatalities.

Toyota said Thursday's recall is due to potential problems with the gas pedal mechanism that can cause the accelerator to become stuck — regardless of whether the vehicle contains a floor mat. Toyota said in certain rare cases, the gas pedal mechanism wears down, causing the accelerator to become harder to press, slower to return or, in some cases, stuck.

6.5 millions of recall within half a year isn't something I would usually associate with quality automaker.

Sounds like QC gone wrong, but at least they took the effort to announce it and all, and are willing to make the changes for their clients.

This, at the very least, gets a thumbsup from me.

if they can afford to do this, this just means that they have established themselves as a quality champion and ppl trust them.

the recall is affecting a lot of batches but do we really have a figure on the actual car problems they have.....

maybe the fault % is so small but they would rather recall , check and replace than wait for accidents to happen. upfront this may look like a disaster but to customers, they will get the feeling that thay are well taken care of.

Maybe other car manufacturers prefer to wrap it up than to publicly announce???

Actually it might have happened on the Lexus accident first.

And now when they check, it is affecting other makes. Toyota = Quality?!? Icon_redface

if u look at the date, its 24th jan... if u read the article, it says its a separate problem regardless of whether there is a mat or not...

i agree... there's just too many components in a car and there's no guarantee that every piece comes out perfect... at least they are willing to take the effort to rectify it and admit to the world that its their fault...

What about Kia?
Any recall?
I really think that this car maker should improve the quality.. Windscreen crack.. Simply by replacing does not solve the problem as the root cause is not found.
And the aftersales service..should improve. Look at the posts that our bros
show can tell.

I personally think that hyundai cars are much better quality and provide better aftersales service to their customers.

Shouldn't Kia review their system??
