Tips On Saving Petrol
Dear
all,
Some useful tips to
consider when you are filling up your petrol tank.
Gas (Petrol) Tips From Jimbo
Someone who has been in petroleum pipeline business for about 31 years and is
currently working for the Kinder-Morgan Pipeline in San Jose, CA wrote the
following information:
We deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period from the pipe line; one
day it's diesel, the next day it's jet fuel and gasoline. We have 34 storage
tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons. Here are some tricks to
help you get your money's worth.
1. Fill up your car or truck in the morning when the temperature is still cool.
Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below
ground; and the colder the ground, the denser the gasoline. When it gets warmer
gasoline expands, so if you're filling up in the afternoon or in the evening,
what should be a gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the
specific gravity and temperature of the fuel (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel,
ethanol and other petroleum products) are significant. Every truckload that we
load is temperature-compensated so that the indicated gallonage is actually the
amount pumped. A one-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for businesses,
but service stations don't have temperature compensation at their pumps.
2. If a tanker truck is filling the station's tank at the time you want to buy
gas, do not fill up; most likely dirt and sludge in the tank is being stirred
up when gas is being delivered, and you might be transferring that dirt from
the bottom of their tank into your car's tank.
3. Fill up when your gas tank is half-full (or half-empty), because the more
gas you have in your tank the less air there is and gasoline evaporates
rapidly, especially when it's warm. (Gasoline storage tanks have an internal
floating 'roof' membrane to act as a barrier between the gas and the
atmosphere, thereby minimizing evaporation.)
4. If you look at the trigger you'll see that it has three delivery settings:
slow, medium and high. When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the
nozzle to the high setting.
You should be pumping at the slow setting, thereby minimizing vapors created
while you are pumping. Hoses at the pump are corrugated; the corrugations act
as a return path for vapor recovery from gas that already has been metered. If
you are pumping at the high setting, the agitated gasoline contains more vapor,
which is being sucked back into the underground tank, so you're getting less
gas for your money.
Hope this will help ease your 'pain at the pump'!

Re: Tips On Saving Petrol
Hi guys, i was reading from a website regarding saving on fuel..
Here's the link: http://www.carbibles.com/gasmileage2.html
Now i was reading tip No. 14 and this is wat it says:
Coast In Gear, Not In Neutral
If you need to coast while you're driving, don't slip the car into neutral but
let it coast in a high gear. Most cars nowadays will shut off the fuel
supply to the engine completely if you coast in gear. If you put it in
neutral, the engine consumes enough petrol to keep it ticking over. ie.
you'll get better fuel economy coasting downhill (for example) in gear.
----------------------------------------
Is this true? I've always thought freeing up the gear would save more fuel and ur engine since it doesnt rev anymore? This is applicable only manual rides. Can someone explain wat this means? thanks~

What happens to the car (Auto gear) when engaging Neutral vs Drive mode while waiting for traffic to turn green?

Re: Tips On Saving Petrol
i heard a rumor, when car stop at traffic, its best to leave at gear 1 instead or netural as i heard netural has more fuel used.

Re: Tips On Saving Petrol
Hi bros, noticed for those wth auto mode for SX or EX when u travel on long roads with no traffic lights or expressways, its best to use the sportstronic mode to save petrol. And it seems that it also makes the Forte lighter then when in drive mode. Any reason for that? My dad who drives the KIA Magnetis Premier taxi gave me this advice as his taxi has the same sportstronic.

For auto car, you shouldn't shift to neutral everytime you get to a traffic light because the auto gearbox will fail earlier. As for manual, neutral is best. How can gear 1 consume less petrol when there's a load on it when you stop at the traffic lights? Your brakes are resisting the engine from moving the car forward.

a fren once told me shud put to N when not moving so the engine will be disengaged like for manual cars.
if put to D the engine is still pushing the wheels forward but just that your brakes stop it onli.. wasting fuel..
then he summarizes saying there's a purpose for the N there.. think he makes sense la..
but like wad tiny said not to do it everytime, if stop for a while onli then no need la.. waste a bit of fuel but save ur gearbox lifespan.

Re: Tips On Saving Petrol
putting it on N will wear out ur gear box fast. The gear box is designed that when it is in D or 1 and u are in full brake, it functions like an N. So better not wear out ur gear box coz it is very expensive to replace/repair.

I tried in my bro's Honda Jazz. Juz stepping on the brakes at red light with the gear at D, i can feel the car vibrate quite a bit. but when I put to N the vibration is gone..
anyone else experience the same?
